Parashat Ki Teitzei
You shall not abuse a needy and destitute laborer, whether a fellow countryman or stranger in your midst. (Deut. 24:14)
How the goods and foods that we consume make their way to our homes and tables matters. I appreciate that the Torah already acknowledges complex societies result in different economic and social classes. It is too easy to forget all the people who play a role in delivering the things we consume to us. Just about anything we could want is a mere click away from being delivered to our doorstep. What would it feel like to just stop a moment and think about where the stuff we acquire comes from and how it gets to us? And then, ask the question, do I value the many people who are a part of that process and how do my behavior and choices reflect that I care?
