Parashat Shoftim

You shall employ judges and officials...in all your settlements...and they shall govern he people with justice. (Deut. 16:18)

I think the most important gift of the Torah is the very idea that society should be governed by values, laws that manifest those values, and judges who regularly adapt how to practice the laws given society is an ever-changing organism. Priests and kings, dictators and oligarchies, are all fallible due to the age old adage--absolute power corrupts absolutely.
