Our age is one in which usefulness is thought to be the chief merit of nature; in which the attainment of power, the utilization of its resources is taken to be the chief purpose of a person in God’s creation. The Greeks learned in order to comprehend. The Hebrews learned in order to revere. The modern person learns in order to use.
I think Shabbat is the remedy. A day to appreciate what is, rather than to tinker and fix it. Ultimately, I think the Shabbat is about practicing humility, remembering we are a very small part of a greater whole.
